From SGS: US - CPSC Approves Alternative Methods for Lead in Substrates in Children’s Products

Two methods allowing the use of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) as a means to test children’s products for lead were formally approved by CPSC on February 21th.

California Prop 65 - Reformulation of Lead and Phtalates in Consumer Products

Recent Prop 65 settlements mandate reformulation of lead and phthalates in a significant number of consumer products. The range of products is from accessories to food contact to other household products. In many settlements, the reformulation for lead involves both lead content and extractable lead.

The EU recently amended the ‘Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive’ by providing illustrative examples of packaging, part of packaging and
non-packaging materials and articles. The chemical requirements for the 4 heavy metals remain unchanged. The new law takes effect on 30 September 2013.
