安全柵的作用是保護(hù)危險(xiǎn)現(xiàn)場端永遠(yuǎn)處于安全電源和安全電壓范圍之內(nèi)。如果現(xiàn)場端短路，則由于負(fù)載電阻和安全柵電阻R的限流作用，會將導(dǎo)線上的電流限制在安全范圍內(nèi)，使現(xiàn)場端不至于產(chǎn)生很高的溫度，引起燃燒。第二種情況，如果計(jì)算機(jī)一端產(chǎn)生故障，則高壓電信號加入了信號回路，則由于齊納二級的嵌位作用，也使電壓位于安全范圍。
值得提醒的是，由于齊納安全柵的引入，使得信號回路上的電阻增大了許多，因此，在設(shè)計(jì)輸出回路的負(fù)載能力時(shí)，除了要考慮真正的負(fù)載要求以外，還要充分考慮安全柵的電阻，留有余地。
除了上述幾種接地外，在很多場合下容易引起混亂的還有一個(gè)供電系統(tǒng)地，也叫交流電源工作地，它是電力系統(tǒng)中為了運(yùn)行需要設(shè)的接地(如中性點(diǎn)接地）。
